Healthcare Reform

I will not be making any political statements here, but with all the recent talk about Health Care reform, I thought I should bring it up. To quote my friend Dr. Ed: “For true healthcare reform to take place in America, we need to change our way of thinking. The “healthcare” system we have in place is not “health” care… it is “sickness” care.”

A recent CDC published study indicates that the United States spends close to $150 billion on obesity, about the same as smoking. In addition, they found that obese patients spend about $1400 dollars more per year on medical expenses, than do their slimmer counterparts. An interesting point was made that Medicare recipients cost even more as their obesity was often coupled with multiple co-morbidities such as diabetes, cancer, arthritis, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

If americans decided to change our lifestyles by eliminating processed foods, eating correct portion sizes and exercising regularly, we could greatly reduce the amount of dollars needed for “health” care. Just my non-political two cents! 🙂 Make today your beginning to a healthy lifestyle.

  1. I could not agree with you more! One of the biggest industries in the US today is the prescription medicine field. People think they can eat what they want, not exercise, and then pay big money for a pill that will reverse the challenges they face. Then they have to face the challenges brought on by the little pill they took! My thoughts are, if you are gonna take a pill use vitamins that will support your efforts to get your body back in shape! You are doing a great job Hether…
