Exercise is Supposed to be FUN!

People tell me all the time that they don’t exercise because they just don’t enjoy it.  I always try to help them find something active that they love because exercise should be fun!  If we find something that we love to do, then it doesn’t feel like a chore. Of course if we are trying to exercise in a form that we hate, it will be super hard to get out of bed, or remember to take our workout clothes to work. Find something you love, and you’ll be excited to get up early, or you’ll rush out of work to get that class you’re so excited about.

When I first started running, I always had such a sense of  joy and accomplishment.  I didn’t necessarily enjoy the running, but the end always felt great!  I was so excited about my first half marathon, and as soon as it was over, I got that runner’s high everyone talks about.  I immediately registered for another half, and began training.  With each half marathon I completed, I felt more accomplished – racing against myself to beat my last time.  But after a while, I started getting less and less excited.  In fact the last half marathon that I ran (#6 or #7, I can’t remember), I didn’t even train at all.  I still had a pretty good time even without training, and that excited me. It made me determined to finally train to reach that goal time I’ve had in my head forever.  So I registered for my favorite half marathon course, and set up a training schedule. However, when it came time for my first training run, I was NOT excited.  I had to force myself to show up, and just didn’t enjoy it at all.  I have only run a few times since then (my race is only a month away!), and I’ve felt the same way every time. I force myself to show up, I don’t push myself, and I quit without hesitation. I now understand what people mean when they say they just don’t enjoy exercise. It’s awful!

BUT, I DO enjoy exercise – I LOVE to dance, I love to strength train, and I love plyometric training. So you know what?  Those are the things I’m going to do!  I will most likely run in this half marathon because I already paid for it, and it’s a very popular race that sells out within hours.  But I’ll hang up my running shoes for a while after this.  I won’t run it in the time I was hoping for, but I’ll complete it.  And I’m sure down the road sometime, I’ll reclaim my joy of running.  But for now, I’m going to stick with what I love.  Because when you are doing something that you love, you are having fun!  And fun doesn’t feel like work. 🙂 I have never once dreaded a Zumba class!

*It’s always ok to change up our workouts!  If we do the same thing over and over, it becomes mundane, and boring.  That’s why I offer such a variety of classes – to keep our bodies guessing, and our minds engaged!  Check out my full line up here.

You Are What You Eat – Even Trainers Fall Off The Wagon!

Summer is my absolute favorite time of year!  I love all the laid back fun of cookouts, and pool parties, and family trips, and having my kids home from school, and having sun-kissed skin, etc.  But with all the fun summer activities, I find that I have indulged too much in the summer time treats! I love a cold, carbonated drink in the hot sun, and I love all the summer time desserts!  But like I always tell my clients, a treat is just that – A TREAT!  NOT an everyday indulgance.  And with all the relaxation by the pool, I have definately not been sticking to my workout schedule.

Not only can I tell a big difference in my body right now (getting very soft around the middle, pants a little too tight, and very sore everytime I work out), but I can feel it in my energy level, in the way I teach (not as much cardio endurance), and in my overall mood everyday.  It is time to step it up, and really focus on my clean eating again!

It’s been a while since I have blogged, but I thought that I would share this with you. One, to show you that yes, I AM human, and it’s not always easy for me either.  I fail just like everyone else!  And two, to be held accountable by all you wonderful people that I hold accountable every day.

We truly are what we eat, and I am never more reminded than when I’ve fallen off the wagon!  I’m ready to get back to clean eating and exercise because I KNOW that’s when I look and FEEL my best! Who’s with me?!

Women “Bulking Up” – A Common Misconception!

I hear women all the time say “but I don’t want to bulk up” when talking about weight lifting. Women tend to stick with lots of Cardio work, and 3 lb weights for fear of turning into a male body builder. 🙂 Ladies, it is almost impossible for you to “bulk up” without some sort of supplement help!! I know you all see the female body builders, and think “I don’t want to look like that”, but I promise that you are NOT doing what they are doing, and therefore, cannot look like that. However, you SHOULD be lifting more… Continue reading “Women “Bulking Up” – A Common Misconception!”

It Really Is That Simple!

The title of this blog is a little misleading.  Yes, ANYBODY can lose weight.  Losing weight is simple. Simple, but NOT easy. I think that probably everyone reading this knows how to lose weight. So why is it so hard to do? Because it requires patience and commitment. It’s been said that people will do ANYTHING to lose weight, except eat right and exercise.

Most don’t want to put the work and effort into it. We are looking for the easy way, the quick fix. And there are literally thousands of claims for “quick fix” diet remedies out there. There are pills that claim you can lose astronomical amounts of weight in 30 days, wraps that claim you can lose inches in just minutes, shakes that claim you won’t be hungry if you only drink them, fad diets that restrict certain foods claiming that’s all you need to do to lose weight fast. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret – there is only one way to safely lose weight and keep it off! Good old fashioned eating right and exercising!!

Most overweight people didn’t just wake up one day overweight.  For most, it was gradual. Why do we then expect to lose it overnight? In order to create a healthy weight, you need to create a healthy lifestyle. Crash dieting is not safe, and it doesn’t work in the long run. Creams, wraps and pills may give you a slimmer look initially, but as soon as they wear off, you are back where you started!

Start with small, attainable goals.  Once you reach those goals, set new ones! By the time you reach your goal weight, you will see that it has become a lifestyle change that will keep you at a healthy weight for life. A good goal to get started with is to incorporate at least 20 minutes of exercise in every day. Just 20 minutes a day – anybody can do it!

For some, you feel that it’s too late.  Maybe you have left the overweight catagory, and are now considered obese. You are overwhelmed with the amount of work it will take, and think you could never accomplish it. I want you to know that you CAN do it! It will take time and commitment and work, but you CAN do it!

I would love to talk to you, and help you get started down the path to health. You are worth it!

Exercise – Where Do I Begin?

The first step to any exercise program is the decision to start! Making a commitment to yourself to become more active will require a lifestyle change, but it’s one of the best commitments you can make for your health. Once you’ve made that decision, where do you begin? Sometimes that thought can overwhelm us, causing us to give up before we’ve even started. There are so many things to choose from!

Here are some tips to beginning an exercise program that is right for you: Continue reading “Exercise – Where Do I Begin?”
